Gary is catering a picnic. There will be 118 guests at the picnic, and he wants each guest to have a 12-ounce serving of salad How much salad should he make?

    12-Ounce Serving of Salad Per Guest

    When it says words like each, or per that means that you multiply them. We'll need to do something called long multiplication.

    118

    x 12

    2*8 = 16

    2*1 = 2

    2*1 = 2

    Add those together straight down the column.

    236

    Now move on to the next number!

    1*8 = 80

    1*1 = 1

    1*1 = 1

    Add those numbers together.

    1180

    Now add both of those numbers together ...

    236+1180 = 1426
