    The equation will be based off of the dimes.

    d = number of dimes

    .1d + 5d (.05) = 3.15

    .35d=3.15

    d=9

    There are 9 dimes, so there must be 45 nickels since there are 5 times as many.

    Check your answer:

    9 (.1) + 45 (.05) =.9+2.25=3.15

    There are 9 dimes and 45 nickels.
