    The 'answer' is the number that 'x' must be in order to make the equation a trye statement.

    For example, if you try ' 1 ' for the answer, then you have to put ' 1 ' in place of 'x' and see if the statement is true:

    5x + 2 = 12

    5 (1) + 2 = 12

    5 + 2 = 12

    7 = 12 < = = This is not true. So ' 1 ' is not the answer.

    Here are the steps:

    5x + 2 = 12

    Subtract 2 from each side:

    5x = 10

    Divide each side by 5:

    x = 2

    There's the answer.
