Five members of the football team and five members of the track team ran the 100-meter dash. Their times are listed in the table below:

Football Track

What is the difference of the means for the two groups?

    Mean (average) of the football team:

    (12.1+13.7+12.1+11.7+14.5) / 5 = 12.82

    Mean (average) of the track team:

    (12.2+11.2+11.3+12.1+13.2) / 5 = 12

    Subtract: 12.82-12 = 0.82 s

    So the difference of the means for the two groups is 0.82 seconds.
