    The perimeter is equal to 2 times the length plus 2 times the width

    We can use the equation p = 2l + 2w, where l is the length and w is the width

    Since the length is 2x, we can plug 2x in for l

    Same with width. We can plug in 3x+2 as w

    p = 2 (2x) + 2 (3x+2)

    Multiply it out. For 2 (3x+2), distribute 2 to both 3x and 2.

    p = 4x + 6x + 4

    Combine like terms.

    p = 10x + 4

    Since the perimeter is 74 inches, we can plug in 74 as p

    74 = 10x + 4

    Subtract 4 from both sides

    70 = 10x

    Divide both sides by 10

    7 = x
