    We need to get our equation to this form:

    y = mx + b

    that is the line equation with m slope and b y-axis intercept. So lets modify our equation:

    4x - 5y = 40

    5y = 4x - 40

    y = (4/5) x - 8

    therefore the y-intercept is - 8
