    What we will do is substitute (2) in (1) and we are left;

    x + 2 * x - 1 = - 4

    3 * x = - 4 + 1

    Now, to find out and, I replace in (2), like so:

    y = 2 * ( - 1) - 1

    y = - 2 - 1 =

    y = - 3

    Therefore, the values are:
