perimeter (P) = 2 (length + width)

=2 (4x+4x-2)

=2 (8x-2) = 16x - 4

thus 16x-4 = 12 (add 4 to both sides)

16x = 16 hence x = 1

length = 4x = 4x1 = 4 inches and width = 4x - 2 = 4-2 = 2 inches
