Olivia has $180 to buy presents for her 3 sisters and 2 nephews. She wants to spend $10 more on each sister than she spends on each nephew. Let s = the amount she spends on each sister, and n = the amount she spends on each nephew.

How much (in dollars) does she spend on each sister?

    S=n+10

    n=s-10

    Then we know that

    3s+2n=180, using n found above we have:

    3s+2 (s-10) = 180

    3s+2s-20=180

    5s-20=180

    5s=200

    s=40

    So Olivia spends $40 on each sister.

    If s=40 then n=30

    3s+2n=180 becomes

    3 (40) + 2 (30) = 180

    120+60=180

    180=180
