Plug teach x into the equation to get a y value then use these values as an ordered pair in the slope formula.

(-3, 19) (4,33)

m = (33-19) / (4 - - 3)

m = 14/7

m = 2

Plug in - 3

f (-3) = 2 (-3) ^2 + 1

f (-3) = 19

f (4) = 2 (4) ^2 + 1

f (4) = 33

or can we just take the derivative and plug it in?

f' (-3) = 4 (-3) = - 12

f' (4) = 4 (4) = 16
