Convert the improper fractions to fractions

    1 1/3 = 4/3 yards

    1 3/4 = 7/4 yards

    Then add them

    4/3 + 7/4 = 16/12 + 21/12 = 37/12 = 3 1/12

    He should buy 4 yards
