    small = x

    large = y

    x+y = 6

    x=6-y

    6x + 12y = 54

    6 (6-y) + 12y = 54

    36-6y + 12y = 54

    6y = 18

    y = 18/6 = 3

    they bought 3 small and 3 large

    check 3*6 = 18

    3*12 = 36

    36+18 = 54
