5x - 2 (7x + 1) = 14x Multiply out
5x - 2*7x - 2*1 = 14x
5x - 14x - 2 = 14x
14x crosses over to other side to become - 14x, and - 2 crosses over to become + 2
5x - 14x - 14x = 2
5x - 28x = 2
-23x = 2
x = 2/-23
x = - 2/23
