Jose wants to build a rectangular kennel for his dog. His dad will let him use a spot in the corner of the yard that is 12 feet 3 inches by 8 feet 11 inches. Estimate how much fencing he will need to buy for the kennel.

    The answer is 42 ft 4 in

    The perimeter of a rectangle with length l and width w is:

    P = 2l + 2w

    l = 12 ft 3 in

    w = 8 ft 11 in

    1 ft = 12 in

    l = 12 * 12 in + 3 in = 144 in + 3 in = 147 in

    w = 8 * 12 in + 11 in = 96 in + 11 in = 107 in

    P = 2 * 147 + 2 * 107 = 294 + 214 = 508 in

    P = 508 in = 504 in + 4 in = 42 * 12 in + 4 in = 42 ft 4 in
