    You have walked 3/8 + 1/8 = (3+1) / 8 = 4/8 of a mile. There are 8 eighths in a mile, so you need to walk 8/8 - 4/8 = (8 - 4) / 8 = 4/8 mile more.

The fraction can be reduced from 4/8 to 1/2. You need to walk 1/2 mile more.

    3/8+1/8=4/8 of a mile. 4/8 of a mile=1/2 of a mile. 1 - 1/2 of a mile = 1/2 of a mile.
