    Here's how I'd work it:

    3 (x-2) + 5x=18

    3x-6+5x=18

    8x=24

    x=3

    To check it, put substitute x into the original equation:

    3 (3-2) + 5 (3) = 18

    3+15=18

    18=18

    3 (x-2) + 5x=18

    3x - 6 + 5x = 18

    simplify

    8x - 6 = 18

    add 6 to both sides

    8x - 6 + 6 = 18 + 6

    8x = 24

    Divide both sides by 8

    8x/8 = 24/8

    x = 3
