You bought a new shirt for $15.95 and 5 pairs of socks. Your friend bought 10 pairs of socks and spent $4.20 less then you. How much did each pair is socks cost

    Let s represent the cost of a pair of socks.

    ... 15.95 + 5s - 4.20 = 10s

    ... 11.75 = 5s

    ... 2.35 = s

    Any of the above equations will get you to the cost of a pair of socks, which is

    $2.35.
