How do you write expanded form to show the place value of each digit?

    For instance, if the problem asks you to write 1285 in expanded form your answer would be 1000+200+80+5. You take the different places in the number like the thousands place, the hundreds place, the tens place, and the ones place, and add up how many thousands you have, etc.

    It's actually pretty hard to explain. I'll show you an example.

    That's 400,000 + 60,000 + 1,000 + 900 + 30 + 5
