    add 13 to both sides of the equation.

    17+13=-8x.

    30=-8x.

    divde both sides by - 8.

    30-8=x⇒x=-308=-154.

    As a check.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    17 = - 13 - 8x ... add 13 to both sides

    17 + 13 = - 13 + 13 - 8x

    30 = - 8x ... now divide both sides by - 8

    -30/8 = (-8/-8) x

    -30/8 = x ... reduce

    - 15/4 = x <===
