A map has a scale of 5 cm : 12 km. Two cities are 7 cm apart on the map. To the nearest tenth of a kilometer, what is the actual distance corresponding to the map distance?

    You can set up a proportion to solve the problem. So do cm/km=cm/km

    Map scale = 5/12

    City: 7 cm/x

    Proportion = 5/12 = 7/x

    Use cross products to solve the proportion ... And you get 16.8 km
