    Okay expand the brackets so that 34x - 408 = 12, then add 408 to both sides

    this gets 34x = 420

    divide both sides by 34 hence x = 420/34 = 12.3529411 ... = 12.353

    34y - 12 = 12, add 12 to both sides

    34y = 24 divide both sides by 34

    y = 24/34 = 0.705882 ... = 0.706
