    An item, x, is marked up 40% and now costs $49.99

    40% is 0.40

    1 times any number will be the same number so we'll use that to add on the original price to the amount of increase

    (1+0.40) x=49.99

    x=49.99/1.4

    x=35.71 so D is the answer
