What two numbers multiply to 12 and add to negative 4?

    12 : 2 = 6

    Check it to make sure.

    2 * 6 = 12

    6 and 2 can be multiplied to get 12.

    But we still need two numbers that can be added to get - 4 that can also be multiplied to get 12. So let's see if 6 and 2 can be added to get - 4.

    We can subtract 6 from 2 to get - 4 but that is subtraction, not addition.

    2 - 6 = - 4

    To make it addition, rather than subtraction, we can change positive 6 (+6) to negative 6 (-6) and add that to 2 to get - 4.

    2 + (-6) = - 4

    So the two numbers that can be multiplied to get 12 and add to - 4 are:

    (I may be wrong though since I had to change the 6 to a negative to be able to add them together to get - 4.)
