    The trick here is recognizing the pattern to this.

    First off, just a clarification, those equals signs should probably be replaced by arrows or something else, since they don't really equal each other, it's just that the left number produces the right one when plugged into a certain function.

    So we're trying to find out that function.

    Basically, you just have to guess and check. What I notice is, take the right number and divide the left from it.

    56/8=7

    42/7=6

    30/6=5

    20/5=4

    So you can see that to get from the left to the right, you multiply the number by the number that's one less than it, or

    left * (left - 1) - > right

    So now you just plug 3 into that.

    3 * (3 - 1) = 3 * 2 = 6

    8=56 - - - > 8 * (8-1) = 56

    7=42 - - > 7 * (7-1) = 42

    6=30 - - > 6 * (6-1) = 30

    5=20 - - > 5 * (5-1) = 20

    3=? - - - > 3 * (3-1) = 6
