17 inches because if you have a cube with one length all u have to do is multiply that length by 4 to find your surface area and he only painted half of the cube so u would divide that by 2

You would find the area of one side, 8.5²

A cube has 6 faces, but you only need to know only half of them, 3.

So the equation would be 3 * 8.5²
