    assuming the candles are equally spaced

    the cake is cut into 4ths, so 4 pieces of cake

    12 candles divided by 4 pieces = 3 candles per piece

    if he ate 3/4 of the cake he ate 3 pieces

    3 * 3 = 9 candles.
