    The number of horses is 40

    Solution:

    Given that on a farm the ratio of horses to cows is 2 : 3

    To find: Number of horses

    From given ratio,

    number of horses : number of cows = 2 : 3

    Let the number of horses be 2x

    Let the number of cows be 3x

    Given that there are total of 100 animals

    Therefore,

    number of horses + number of cows = 100

    2x + 3x = 100

    5x = 100

    x = 20

    Therefore, number of horses = 2x = 2 (20) = 40

    Thus there are 40 horses
