You convert it to feet. There are 5,280 feet in a mile. Then convert it to inches. 5,280 feet multiplied by 12 (since there are 12 inches in a foot) is 63,360.
So ... 1 mile = 5,280 feet
5,280 feet = 63,360 inches
and so
1 mile = 63,360 inches
