How do I simplify 6y-y

    You have to take the Y out of the equation by factoring. y (6-1)

    Think of 6y as

    y + y + y + y + y + y

    Now subtract a y from that.

    y + y + y + y + y + y - y = y + y + y + y + y = 5y
