    Call the number of courses ' C '.

    Whatever it is, it will cost her [ 55 + 450C ].

    How many courses can she get for $1,200?

    55 + 450C = 1200

    Subtract 55 from each side:

    450C = 1145

    Divide each side by 450:

    C = 1145 / 450 = 2.544 ...

    She can only register for a whole number of courses, so 2 is the limit.

    That will cost her (55 + 2x450) = (55 + 900) = $955

    and she'll have $245 left over ... not enough for another course.
