The answer to this question would be: 4 different ways

It will be easier to answer this question by making a list of the possible way. In this question, the group is either 10 rocks or single rock. Then the list should look like this:

    1. 3 groups of 10 rocks + 8 groups of single rock

    2. 2 groups of 10 rocks + 18 groups of single rock

    3. 1 groups of 10 rocks + 28 groups of single rock

    4. 0 groups of 10 rocks + 38 groups of single rock

    The answers are:

38 ways to group the rocks as individual rocks; or 3 groups of 10 with 8 individual rocks.

    Explanation:

Grouping them as single rocks will give the same number of groups as we have total rocks. This is 38.

Grouping them as groups of 10, to find the number of groups, we divide. 10 goes into 38 three times; this means there will be 3 groups of 10. This is 10*3 = 30 rocks. There are 38-30=8 rocks left to be grouped as single rocks.
