Because of slumping sales a small company had to lay off some employees. the ratio of total employees to employees laid off is 5 to 1. How many employees were laid off if there are a total of a 110 employees

    5/1 = 110/x

    Cross multiply

    5x = 110

    divide both sides by 5

    5x/5 = 110/5

    x = 22

    22 employees were laid off
