Tom eats 2/3 of the pie, and Sam eat 1/4 of the pie. What fraction of the pie is left?

    Set the denominators alike and then simplify. 2/3 and 1/4 both have 12 as a common denominator so you could set them as 8/12 and 3/12. 8-3 is 5 so what is left is 5/12
