    "What is the number?"

    The value of "the number" at the moment is indefinite, therefore, we will refer to it as "x". Any value that we are unsure of, and more commonly asked to solve for, can be represented by a variable, which is a letter. To solve for the number in question, let's look at the clues given to us.

    "the length is 2 more than a number"

    length = 2 + x

    "the width is 5cm less than twice the same number"

    width = 2x - 5 (I excluded the cm because measurements are in the same unit; it will be added to the final answer, however).

    Now that we have translated the clues above, let's look for clues regarding the said "length" and width".

    "the perimeter of a rectangle is 54cm"

    perimeter = 54 = 2 (2 + x + 2x - 5)

    (2 (length + width) is the formula for perimeter)

    perimeter = 54 = 2 (3x - 3)

    54 = 2 (3x - 3)

    54 = 6x - 6

    60 = 6x

    10 = x

    The number is 10.
