    The previous year's salary is x.

    This year's salary is x + 3000.

    12% of this year's salary is $4200.

    12% * (x + 3000) = 4200

    0.12 (x + 3000) = 4200

    x + 3000 = 35,000

    x = 32,000

    Answer: Her salary in the previous year was $32,000.
