Two 5-pound bags of oranges and one 8-pound bag of oranges are being shared equally by three friends. Which expression can be evaluated to find the number of pounds oranges each person will get?

    In order to calculate this we must first combine the like terms, which in this case are the three bags of oranges. Once we have that we can divide that number by the amount of friends in order to get an equal amount of oranges that each friend will receive. This can all be done with the following expression where x is the amount each friend will receive.

    (5 + 5 + 8) / 3 = x

    18 / 3 = x

    6 = x

    So we can see that each friend will receive a 6-pound bag of oranges.
