    The pipe is 36 inches long. It will be cut into pieces which is 21/4 inches long.

    => 21/4 - improper fraction.

    => 5.25 or 5 and 1/4

    => 36 inches / 5.25

    => 6.87 inches or 6 87/100

    Solution:

    All you need to do is to divide 36 by 21/4
