    Step-by-step explanation:

    1) Olivia is x years old. Peyton is 6 years older than Olivia. This means that Peyton's age is (x + 6) years Three times Peyton's age is equal to 24. The equation that could be used to solve for Olivia's age is

    3 (x + 6) = 24

    2) 3x + 18 = 24

    Subtracting 18 from the left hand side and the right hand side of the equation, it becomes

    3x + 18 - 18 = 24 - 18

    3x = 6

    Dividing the left hand side and the right hand side of the equation by 3, it becomes

    3x/3 = 6/3

    x = 2

    3) Peyton's age = x + 6 = 2 + 8

    = 8 years
