    x-$114.58=$62.17

x is the amount of money he has before his shoe purchase, and if you subtract the amount of money he spent on his shoes, then you would have the money left over, so if you add the amount of money left over and the amount of money spent on shoes, you get the amount of money in his wallet before he bought shoes

    You do m=114.58+62.17
