A feeding trough was made by hollowing out half of a log. The trough is shaped like half a cylinder. It is 5 feet long and has an interior diameter of 1.5 feet. What is the volume of oats that will fill the trough?

    Answer=4.18 feet³

    The formula for the volume of a cylinder is:

    V=πr²h

    However, the cylinder in the problem is half cylinder, so we have to edit the formula to.

    V = (πr²h) / 2

    Now lets plug in the information known ...

    diameter/2=radius

    1.5/2=radius

    0.75=radius

    V = (π*0.75²*5) / 2

    V = (π*0.5625*5) / 2

    V = (π*2.8125) / 2

    V = (8.8357) / 2

    V=4.1785 feet ³

    round to the nearest hundredth

    V=4.18 feet³
