After a heavy snowfall, George shovels 12 2/4 square yards of snow off his driveway in 1 1/2 hours. At this rate, how many square yards of driveway would he shovel in 5 1/2 hours?

    You can solve this problem with an equation.

    Let x = the number of square yards of snow shoveled in 1 hour.

    1.5x = 12.5

    Divide both sides by four. 12.5/1.5 = 8 1/3.

    George shovels 8 1/3 square yards of snow in one hour. Now multiply this number by 5 1/2.

    5 1/2 * 8 1/3 = 17 3/16.

    George shovels 17 3/16 square yards of snow in 5 1/2 hours.
