You spend $40 for 8 hamburgers and 4 hotdogs at a ballgame. The next game you spend $32 for 3 hamburgers and 10 hotdogs. How much does a hamburger cost? How much does a hotdog cost?

    Step-by-step explanation:

    8*M + 4*D = $40

    3*M + 10*D = $32

    You can rearrange and substitute variables, but I do like this method: Find a way to subtract one of the variables out:

    3 * [8*M + 4*D = $40] = > 24*M + 12*D = 120

    8 * [3*M + 10*D = $32] = > 24*M + 80*D = 256

    Subtract ... 0 + 68*D = 136

    Divide ... D = $2

    Now substitute in:

    3*M + 10*$2 = $32

    3*M + $20 = $32

    3*M = $12. So M = $4
