If you were to multiply a mixed number by a mixed number by hand, you would need to convert each to an improper fraction and then multiply. This would not be necessary if you were using a fraction calculator to multiply the mixed numbers.

    I would guess that this is true. assuming that the fraction calculator can handle mixed numbers, there would be no reason to convert to improper fractions before multiplying them
