    Total distance = 230 miles.

    Distance traveled by mr Smith + Distance traveled by mr Stein = 230

    Distance traveled by mr Stein = 230 - Distance traveled by mr Smith

    Therefore Distance traveled by mr Stein = 230 - y

    Or to make things shorter

    Let Distance traveled by mr Stein = x

    This implies x + y = 230

    X = 230 - Y
