    P=38

    P=2x+2y=2 (x+y)

    x=9+y

    so

    38=P=2 (x+y)

    38=2 (x+y)

    divide both sides by 2

    19=x+y

    x=9+y

    19=9+y+y

    19=9+2y

    minus 9 both sides

    10=2y

    divide by 2

    5=y

    sub back

    x=9+y

    x=9+5

    x=14

    x=14

    y=5
