The population of a city is 25,000. if the number of males is 240 more than the number of females, how many males and females are there in the city?

    m+f=25000, using m from above in this equation gives you:

    f+240+f=25000 combine like terms on left side

    2f+240=25000 subtract 240 from both sides

    2f=24760 divide both sides by 2

    f=12380, and since m=f+240

    m=12620

    So there are 12620 males and 12380 females in the city.
