Which is the best strategy to solve this problem?

Cary has 49 basketballs and 35 volleyballs. He divided all the basketballs and volleyballs equally among 7 boxes.

How many balls were in each box?

Draw a diagram.

Draw 49 basketballs and 35 volleyballs. Divide each group into 7 smaller groups. Then divide each of those groups into 2.

B.

Guess and test.

Guess that the number of items in each box is 8. Multiply 7 * 8. Ask yourself if this is the same as the sum of 49 + 35? If not, revise your guess, and test your answer again.

C.

Write a number sentence.

49 divided by 7 + 35 divided by 7 =
