We know that Julia has some dollars, but not how many. As this is an unknown amount, we put a letter there instead of the exact number. Let's call this amount x.

Francis has five dollars more than Julia. As Julia's amount is called x, Francis' amount is x+5

We also know that Francis and Julia together have at most 45 dollars. This gives us:

    x + (x+5) ≤ 45

    The solution is then:

    D) 2x+5 ≤ 45
