    (a) how much potting soil he bought last week

    (b) 28 = 2p + 4

    (c) 28 = 2p + 4 ... subtract 4 from both sides

    28 - 4 = 2p ... simplify

    24 = 2p ... divide both sides by 2

    24/2 = p ... simplify

    12 = p ... 12 solves the equation

    (d) He bought 12 lbs of potting soil last week
