    Alex had 22 toy cars in the beginning of this story

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Initially, Alex had Y cars.

    He gave 11 of them to his friend.

    So then he had Y - 11 cars.

    Later his dad bought him twice as many toy cars as he had in the beginning.

    Now he had Y - 11 + 2Y = 3Y - 11 cars.

    How many toy cars did Alex have in the beginning of this story if now he has 55 of them?

    Now we have that:

    3Y - 11 = 55

    3Y = 66

    Y = 66/3

    Y = 22

    Alex had 22 toy cars in the beginning of this story
